The Social Agency studio was given an industrial site on the polluted Shea's Creek in Alexandria and asked to develop a scheme based on the theme of 'Abandonment.'
To address the issue of abandonment in both Shea’s Creek and the mental health
system, I drew on my passion for healthcare design to create a Holistic Psychiatric Support Centre. Guided by the concept of ‘Valuing Safety through Refuge and Growth’, the design embraces the philosophy of dialectics to find the middle ground between
abandonment and restraint, creating a place where people can find refuge while being supported to reach their full potential.

Comprising emergency, inpatient and community care, the Centre uses residential scale, form and materiality to foster a welcoming, non-institutional atmosphere. It provides abundant gardens, plentiful natural light, spaces with varying levels of stimulation and privacy, and prospect and refuge. People are given the opportunity to contribute,
express emotions, form connections with others, and feel valued.
